I love trying out new things. A while back I decided that I know longer wanted to do the normal engagement sessions twhere I follow the the couple around while a photographer is popping shots at them. Where is the story there. This was a fun way to get out that save the date message and satisfied my directing bug.

I felt like I really got to know Ling Ling and Ryan that day along with my number two Grady. We are so excited for there wedding in October, and hope people enjoy watching this film as much as we did putting it together.

The Same Day Edit (SDE). How I love and hate doing them. They are high pressure and it’s the only time I truly sweat at a wedding anymore.

The most important thing to do when you are working on an SDE is to plan it out. To not plan it out is to put out a sub par product. I actually storyboarded this film even though I can’t draw and have to explain to my crew what it is that they are looking at. To have this reference is so unbelievably helpful. If you just walk in with the plan of shots in your head what is the likelihood that you’ll forget a few? We barely made it with this one (hey stop motion is hard!), but the reaction we got from the crowd makes it completely worth it. I’ll put that clip up tomorrow.

On the business side of things, it is the best free advertisement you can show at a wedding. What are the chances that one of the guests are engaged or close to being engaged? These have done so well for our studio that we have started doing an SDE only package. The couple gets a deal and we have no back log and there is nothing like being back log free!

Shooting this live event really made me want to shoot a music video. The advantage of not shooting live events is that I’m working in an environment where I can control location, light and sequences being shot. I had a lot of fun working with this band. If you couldn’t tell from the music being played this is far beyond driven a Pantera cover band and yes the lead singer is a woman and has one of the sickest heavy metal voices I have ever heard. We are currently working on a promo for them and will be having a finished clip for them in the coming weeks.

This is footage from our 7d with an 85mm lens attached for strictly up close shots. We also got some ridiculous looking steadicam shots but you’ll have to stay tuned to see that stuff. We had a few different recordings for audio going on. We miked the speakers with our h4 zoom and we also had Adam’s friend come down to set up some mics to go straight to is computer. The audio you’re listening to is straight off the cameras so the good audio wwill be up at a later date.

I miss The Wire. It is probably the best cop dram ever!

This is my favorite example of how to tell a story only using a narrative story telling style. I love that there is only one word that goes back and forth between two characters and that just through there actions and the camera work that you know by the end exactly what happened. I showed this to my team the other day and I really think that they are starting to get it. I feel a little silly not showing this to them a long time ago because this is actually one of the first clips I’ve ever watched when I first got into video production.

Ok now the really geeky part.

1. Pay attention to the camera angles notice the use of close, medium, wide

2. Inserts! they are more important then you realize

3. The tight shots on there faces. It tells the entire story!

I shot this wedding a few weeks ago over at the DragonRidge Country Club here in Henderson. One thing I think that I’m starting to realize is that fancy camera moves will never be able to compete against good lighting, composition and of course a good story. A good question to ask yourself whenever you are shoot a sequence is where is my focus? what is it you want your viewers to concentrate on. This is a question I am constantly asking my second shooters. I think it’s easy to get lost in all the gear that we filmmakers accumulate but if we just stopped and looked at the big picture the work would be so much better.

I really liked this video. I am inspired by music all the time it is what helps me create my video work. Although at times the video work is a bit shakey for my taste I loved the concept.
